PCOS is characterized by a state of inflammation and insulin resistance. Recent studies have supported the role of gut microbiota in the development of PCOS. Disturbances in gut bacterial flora from a poor diet are associated with an increase in gut permeability and passage of colonic bacteria into systemic circulation; resulting in activation of the immune system. This interferes with insulin function in the body and reproductive hormonal levels. Increased insulin level stimulates further the production of androgen hormone in the ovaries, which in turn impairs the normal functioning of the ovaries and menstrual regularity and hence possibly one of the factors of infertility.
