Recent studies have reported that low thyroid level or hypothyroidism raises the risk of developing type II diabetes; the risk is even greater for those who are diagnosed as prediabetic.
Thyroid hormones affect how the body converts food into energy; and under-active thyroid can subsequently lead to weight-gain, which is a major risk factor for type II diabetes. An association was also found between hypothyroidism and insulin resistance, which is another important risk factor for type II diabetes.
